Attention Can Be Earned
Useful information. A helpful answer. An entertaining story. A local resource. An idea worth sharing. A solution to a problem. At that point, marketing stops feeling like an interruption.
Gartner reported in 2026 that most U.S. consumers try to ignore advertising, while many actively avoid or block it. Its guidance points toward experiences that deliver clear value through utility, education or genuinely positive moments rather than simply forcing exposure.
Useful Marketing Changes the Relationship
Site Impact reported in 2026 that when personalized marketing feels genuinely useful, many consumers visit the brand’s website or consider making a purchase. The important word is useful.
A roofing company can explain how homeowners identify storm damage. A restaurant can publish local food guides. An accountant can simplify tax changes. A garden center can teach homeowners what grows best locally. A remodeling company can explain realistic renovation costs before asking for an appointment.
Trust May Be More Valuable Than Exposure
The 2026 Edelman Trust Barometer found that trust is important or critical for most consumers when deciding what to purchase, roughly alongside value and quality.
Edelman also emphasizes utility as a driver of brand relevance and recommends leading with earned attention and using paid advertising to amplify it. Create something worth discovering first. Then promote it.
Build Something Worth Returning To
Useful marketing has another advantage: it can keep working after the campaign ends. A helpful article, calculator, checklist, local guide, comparison, FAQ or demonstration can continue attracting people through search, referrals and direct sharing long after an interruption ad has stopped running.
That does not mean every business needs to become a media company. It means the company should identify what customers repeatedly need to know before, during and after a purchase. Those questions are raw material for marketing that solves a problem while demonstrating expertise.
Over time, a library of genuinely useful information can change the relationship. The business is no longer only asking for attention when it has something to sell. It becomes a resource customers can revisit. Paid promotion can then amplify proven useful material rather than manufacture relevance from scratch. That is a very different growth model from buying interruption after interruption and hoping familiarity eventually becomes demand.
The BizScope
Businesses do not necessarily need to stop advertising. They may need to reconsider what advertising is supposed to accomplish. Marketing can educate customers, answer questions, solve problems, support communities, demonstrate expertise, make buying easier and give people reasons to return even when they are not ready to purchase.
Don’t interrupt people long enough for them to remember your business. Become valuable enough that they don’t want to forget it.
Business Experience. Shared Forward.
